That is not true. Dealers will say stuff like that, but it is simply not true. Besides, for the most part oil is oil. There are a million websites and even more threads about oil use and warrenties. Changing it often is far more important then using $4 a quart vs $1 a quart.

Listen to Zig Zilla. Do not baby the engine. You have to get on it once in a while for the rings to seat properly, and, do not use syn oil during the break in.

Change the oil after the break in is complete. Oil is cheap, change it often.

correct, 02Vinson ... Synthetic oil is way to slick for the initial breakin and it is not suggested to be used until about 500 miles are put on your motor. As far as the warranty issue with motorcycle oil or atv oil , That is what the dealer told me when i purchased my latest ATV. (vinson) why bother using car oil when Suzuki oil is only $2.50 a quart. As soon as i hit around the 500 -600 mile mark i will switch over to amsoil.

Default Vinson maintenance question

I heard somewhere that the new Polaris machines come with Polaris Synthetic oil in them also. There is quite a bit of debate surrounding the "break in" for new motors. I am not totally sold on synthetic oil in anything with a wet clutch. Too much slip is not a good thing. There are a million guys that use synthetic in wet clutched machines with no problems though. I use the cheap Mobil natural dino oil, no problems at all and I have A LOT of miles on the Z.

This is true.....I do believe since 1992 Corvettes have teamed up with Mobil in that marketing scheme. If i remember correctly the mobil insignia is even under the hood of the corvette. But with all due respect i am talking about small 4 stroke engines. If you would take the time to do your homework you willl find that synthetic oils may be a little to slick for the rings to wear properly.
MnTurboPaws, If you want to use synthetic oil for your breakin period go right ahead....I really dont think anyone cares. It's you choice. this is what forums are for ,opinions. Just like snowdog said , there is much debate about this whole subject.

Default Vinson maintenance question

I have another question. I was planning on doing my own maintenance. If I use a Fram filter and quality automobile oil for my oil changes, will this void my warrantee? The OEM filters are quite expensive at the dealer ($15). Is there a website that sells OEM filters? Any info appreciated, thanks!!!

Grump, stay away from Fram filters, they are junk. Go with the wix brand instead.
You can get them at Napa auto parts. I run Valvoline atv oil 10w-40 in my Vinson with
the wix filter.

at the dealership here they said if you use anything other than suzuki oil and filter, it will void the warranty. after my 6 mo. is up, i am going to try to find castrol oil for 4 wheelers. a guy at work said he bought some a while back. i plan on changing mine every 1000 miles or six months.
