Default Quadzilla starting

I recently bought a 89 quadzilla and love it. I am finding starting it somewhat hit and miss however. The engine has less than 1 hour run time and runs very well. It starts easy cold with the choke but when warm it starts right up sometimes and other times I need to push it. I may sound stupid but I can't figure out if I should give it more thottle or less. The carb has no idle jet as it was made for racing. If anyone could give me some advice it sure would make my ridding time easier.

HI BUDDY:
EVEN THOUGH IT IS BUILT FOR RACING . I WOULD GET THAT CARBURATOR DIALED IN SO IT WILL IDLE.
NO REASON WHY IT CANT DO BOTH.

2ND. HERE IS MY OWN PERSONAL PREFERENCE FOR STARTING MY OWN 500 ZILLA.
I GET IT ON COMPRESSION STROKE WITH KEY OFF AND GET IT TO TURN OVER 2 TIMES. THEN I TURN THE IGNITION ON AND GET IT UP ON TOP DEAD CENTER AGAIN AND POP IT FIRES EVERY TIME. I DO THE SAME WHEN ITS COLD WITH THE CHOKE ON.

JUST HOW I DO MINE IS ALL..... I WANT HIGH INTENSITY LIGHTING PLEASE MESSAGE ME IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEA`S PEOPLE. THANK YOU

Nice to hear that you are loving your zilla bud, i love mine too . About the starting, as capecodder mentioned you should get that carb worked on cause it should do both. There are a few things that you can do because I had a similar problem. The first thing I did was to replace the reeds or if you cant afford them then just flip it over, yes it works i did it for months on mine. You can boil out the carb with a kit you can get from an auto parts store and it worked great. I find that when I start my zilla I just get a little throttle i mean just a little and then kick it over but it is going to be something that you will have to find. A service manual is great for troubleshooting these types of problems.

Thanks for the info guys. I have had 2-strokes most of my life but this is my first big-bore. I am slowly getting the hang of getting the kick starter on the compression stroke and I think that is a big part of my problem. The carb is a Keihin and the former owner said you couldn't adjust the idle and turning the choke **** is the air screw but the fine print on the carb says it's the idle adjustment. I will try it in the morning to see which it is. What he was telling me didn't make sense but you never know. I have really enjoyed reading the threads in this forum and it lead to my buying the quadzilla.
Thanks again

I know I should probably ask this in a new thread but... Don what kind of bulbs can I use on the stock system I have now, its an 88. I want something that will be good for night riding because the regular bulb i have now is not good enough in my opinion.

they make a halogen bulb for the stock light that helps some . but if you want to go brighter youll need to get the stator rewound . its 75 dollars to get that done .then you can upgrade to better lights . i think rocky mountain or dennis kirk sell the brighter halogen bulbs for the stock light .

ok its dennis kirk . pg 609 of there catalog. they are xenon lights . the halogen is standard . the super white in the 60/55 waqtt is part #22-331 , the 100/80 is # 22- 332 . the standard xenon 60/55 watt is #22-329 , the 100/80 #is 22-330 . they say they are 30% brighter than factory halogen . the superwhite is supposed to be more like real daylight/whiter . i do not know if you would need to upgrade the stator to run the 100/80 . you might but not sure . hope it helps . Don

To piggyback on what a few in here already said, definately get the carb straightened out, there should be no reason why you can't have the idle screw working. I'm running the stock carb that was bored out. Also careful on the kick starting, as anyone in here who has one will tell you, if you don't kick it on top compression, they have been known to throw a person over the bars, or definately do some damage to the ankle. I've actually bent the steel shanks on climbing boots kick starting mine.
