i was wonderin what are the best performance upgrades for a 87 suzuki 230 quad sport. also does a k&n air filter make a diffrence in horse power, and i bought nerf bars about 3 days ago and i was puttin them on and on the directions it says to remove stock foot pegs which i dont understand beacuse if i do then where is my shifter going to sit beacuse its part of the foot peg.

I put a K&N, drilled some holes in my air box, and a Dg rcm pipe and muffler... sure runs alot better than before.... I am 250 lbs. plus so, on a 230 ..I can notice differences...LOL !! I am waiting on a set of front shocks off a 300ex.. They a about an inch longer but, I hope they help the front suspension..I also upgraded the rear shock to a later model with res...made a world of difference !!

A k&n will help especially with a pipe and jets. The next thing to do to a 230 is cam and valves. Then you can gear it a little taller. Don't the pegs go back on after you install the nerfs? If not a PW50 or pw80 shifter is a shorty shifter that willl bolt right up to the shaft and get rid of the whole linkage assembly.

It would be the same. A shifter from a suzuki PW50 or PW80 dirt bike is the most common shifter swap for the 230's I believe. Measure the distance from the shifter shaft to where a shifter would be comfortable and then go to the dealer and have them match up a smaller bikes shifter. Most suzuki's use the same number of splines, and the same shaft size.
