Default Z400 getting fuel in oil, please help

My buddy has a z400 and it has been getting fuel in the oil almost since it was new. It doesnt smoke and performs perfect, dont think it is bad rings. He took it to the dealer and they said it was fine, I dont think they know what they are talking about. There is so much fuel in the oil that it spues out win the oil cap is removed. My only thought is that the floats could be sticking while it sits or is transported.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Any suggestions please.

I've never had that problem with my Z. How old is the bike? Under warranty? I can't believe the dealer would just let that go back out of the shop if you can smell gas in the oil. Might want to find another dealer, or shop.

Well if it's still under warranty i'd find another dealer to take it to, sounds like that one didn't want to do any warrany work. In the meantime, i'd take a look at the floats and make sure they're not sticking. And if you have access to the right tools, check the compression and make sure you don't have a ring problem. Someone in here should be able to tell you the correct compression for the bike, i'm not sure and don't want to lead you astray. If the floats are fine, and the compression is correct, i'd get the bike into a dealer quick, before you do any motor damage!

Is he standing it up on the grab bar at all? Maybe for storage or transporting? If so that could be a reason.....
Fyi: if you do stand it up be sure to drain the carb first.

I'm sure you noticed that the tank petcock has no "off" only res, pri and on. It is supposed to shut off automatically when the engine stops, it only opens when the engine is running and there is vacuum present. If this sticks or malfunctions it could stay on, then if you stand the bike or even lean it awkardly in transit it can drain fuel through the carb into the cylinder, and even if the rings are good the gas will trickle past them into the oil.

Just a thought.

Your on the right track. He could also have the carb float valve leaking.... Petcock fills carb, float valve wont seal, gas is either going in the crank or on the floor.......

Okay, I have a few questions for you:

1 Why do you think it is fuel getting in the oil, is it just because oil comes out of the reservoir after you take the cap off?

2 When are you checking the oil, hot engine or cold engine?

3 have you checked the oil after it has sat for a few days?

4 Have you actually drained the oil and measured the amount of oil that came back out?

If you hold a flame to the dipstick will the oil ignite?

I does sound like the automatic fuel shutoff is not working.
You may want to either open the float bowl drain or pull the fuel line from the carb and confirm the leakage.
Then you can tell you less than helpful dealer "It is leaking and I want it fixed."
