Default Tecate4 or the LT250R?

I have an old dirtwheels from 87 that is a 250 quad shootout. The drag results were Tecate, LT, TRX. The handling ranking was TRX, LT, Tecate. Whether you agree with DW or not is another matter. I'll try to scan the article.

IMO the Tecate was the best looking high perfomance quad of it's day and that kawi green looked really cool.

Does anyone have the 88 shootout? The T-4 was definately faster and more powerful....Kawasaki made some of the strongest engines available back in the day. The T-4 was too narrow and this hurt it's handling. The guy that was responsible for this design flaw was later welcomed with open arms by Yamaha too build quads for them....

I've got the '88 shootout, I'll try to look it up. Would be good to refresh my memory. I've also got that issue where they ran all the hi-po quads on a drag strip.

I had a 250R and a Tecate at the same time, both were piped, jetted and ran as good as they could for what they had. The Tecate was a bit faster through the gears but the suspension not only sucked it needed a complete front end upgrade to be close in the handling department. Take a look at the stock shocks next time you have a chance, they are about 12" long and way over damped. In comparison, the 250R handled like a slot car and the Tecate like an icecream truck. It was that bad but the Tecate did run and look good.

Here are the results of the top speed shootout over a 1/4 mile drag strip in the June '88 edition of 3&4 Wheel Action.

Quad 500 79.26 mph
Banshee 77.05
Tecate-4 74.75
250R 71.89
Quad 250 71.48
Mojave 57.84

I couldn't find the '88 DW 250 shootout, but ATV Sports (formally 3-Wheeling) had it for both '87 & '88.

'87 Final point standings

Quad Racer 248.25
250R 243.25
Tacate-4 222.75

'88 Final point standings

250R 232.25
Quad Racer 221.25
Tecate-4 192.25
