230 smokes

If it still runs good I'd disagree with the rings being solely to blame. Is it hard to start? Doing a top end on a 230 is cake. The hardest part is pulling the motor. On it's out its simple. I'd pull the head and take it to the shop and see what they think about the valve components. Don't you have 2 motors? You could swap heads to see what happens. If it turn out to be valves a shop will swap them out for fairly cheap. If you are going to replace them I'd get upgraded ones with stifffer springs.

do a leakdown and compression test. if they are both good there is no reason to rebuild just a waste of time and money. could be oil seals or valve seats a little soft. top end rebuild is simple. if you are willing to pull it down i will answer and help you with any questions you might need or problems you might face.
