Default Sprocket question on Z400

I recently went down a tooth in the front to a 13T and now (or I really don't remember if it did this before too) it seems like 5th is simply an "over-drive" gear. I was wondering what I can do to make my Z "grab" 5th and pull. Right now I'm better off winding out 4th than going to 5th as it will slow me down or keep me steady. So, do I go up in the back (more accel.) or would I have to go up in the front and down in the back to get more top end. I was thinking if I go to a 41 or 42 in the back (more accel.) that I could be able to "top-out" earlier in each gear, thus allowing me to grab 5th and be able to accelerate decently. Or do I have this backwards and need to go back to a 14T in the front and down in the rear???

Thanks

Since you went down a tooth in the front, fifth gear must have been even worse (less accell) with the stock 14t. If you want more pull in fifth, you will need to add teeth to the rear and/or drop another tooth in the front.
