Quadracer Problems...Need some help
#1
Hey guys...I have an 87 Quadracer 250, and i have a couple problems. The main thing i am worried about is when i first start it, it revs up very high, even with the choke on. After about ten seconds it falls and holds a steady idle. I would think it running too lean, but it fouls plugs very easily. The plugs are a dark brown or light black usually, so i dont think its running lean. We found a few problems, such as running the wrong plug, reed plates MAY have been installed wrong, and there was a gasket that was sealed with Silicone. We put the right plug in ( One in it was a B8ES, and we changed to B8EGV), made our own gasket that fits perfect, and turned the reeds around. The reason we think the reed plates were in wrong is because there was a big gap between the plates and cage. There was a spacer on one side, and we turned it so that the spacer was facing upwards, and the plates sat flat against the cage. Well, we put it all together, started it...and it revs up just like it used to. We cannot figure out what is wrong, and i dont wanna put it in a shop because they are expensive, and i have never had to put it in one before, so i dont think we need to this time. I am also only 14, and cannot afford a person to work on it for me. The 'Racer has an FMF pipe and silencer, Uni air filter, Torque reed plates, stock jetting, and 50:1 with Klotz Super Techniplate oil. I dont think FMF recommends a jet change with their pipe, so i dont think its jetted too far off. The plugs may have been fouling because of the wrong one in there, but i have not been able to ride it long enough to see if thats why it is fouling them. But it deffinately still revs up at the first ten seconds of a cold start, so if anyone has a clue...im willing to try anything that is not too expensive. Thanks

its not your plug you can run either and its not going to make a difference. You may want to go through the carb it might have something to do with the pilot jet but most of the time its not nessacery to change it for a pipe just the main. It sounds to me your lean in the cold fire up and then the system cathces up as it warms up? which affects the pilot and the needle setting. also i would get some refference on your reeds couse if ther after market like boysen you should not have the metal pieces on the reed cage anymore. Just make sure you have no air leaks.

Hmm, sounds lean to me too...
I'd suspect an air leak somewhere if the plug is burning relatively good... Get online and look for tips of how to do a leak-down test... I'm willing to bet you've got a leaker
Good luck

I also had that problem with my 87. First thing I was told is it was sucking air in from the carb boot or the air filter boot/ air filter connection. I found out that my fuel petcock needed cleaning, so i took the petcock off and found the filter screens were plugged with dirt. I cleaned both screens and the problem went away. I have also found that when the fuel runs below the filter screens it revs up dangerously high. I guess its because it is sucking in more air than fuel. I always make sure that I have a full tank of fuel before I go out on a big ride. Another thing could be your carb spring. Remove the four screws from the top of your carb and look at the Spring. It could be to elongated (stretched out) Replace that and see how things turn out. Good luck.:
