what to look for on a king quad?
#2
Blazier316,
I owned a 87 KQ and do most of the maintenance on my bro's 97 KQ.The KQ is a very dependable 4x4.Not the quickest or best riding 4x4 out there,but it serves its purpose well.The brake system on the KQ is currently the worst sealed drum brake setup I've ever personally seen on a 4x4 quad.A day of mud riding and your in for a real good time cleaning up the brake parts.Watch out for these brakes.
A good inspection will help ensure that you get what your paying for,look at the following
1.Air box,it should be perfectly clean and dirt free inside.A wet box could indicate the quad was used as a submurine,a dirty filter indicates neglect.
2.Check the oil level,look at the oil level sight glass located in the right rear side of the KQ.Is it showing signs of water entry?[moisture inside the sight glass]It should be clean and moisture free.
3.Jack up the quad,the front/rear wheels should have no side to side free play,free play could indicate costly wheelbearing problems.
4.Look at the skid plate underneath the quad.It should not have alot of hard dents in it.If so,the quad was jumped alot and perhaps misused.Check all the shocks for leakage too.
5.Start the quad,does it smoke?
6.Test ride the quad,does it smoke on acceleration?Does it idle smoothly?How smoothly is it's acceleration?If the quad smokes badly,probably a future engine rebuild is in sight.
7.Shift all the tranny ranges,use them all.Does the KQ tranny sound ok?No grinding or whinning noises while test riding?If the range shift lever seems a little tight going into gear,thats generally ok,these tranny ranges take a while to master.
Aside from the poor design on the KQs brakes,its a good little 4x4.
Best of luck,====Bill

I've heard that the Brakes go really quick, and the tires really suck in mud and snow and stuff. Since then they have changed to a different tire, and changed their brake system...
If I might add, you should also check for a NEW King Quad, because that way if anythign happens you will have the warrenty (But I can't spell) LOL.
