I have recently purchase a 00 King Quad.
I'm totally satisfied with its perfomance.
But, the big boys leave me in the mudhole.
I don't have the clearance that they have and
it bottoms out in the ruts.
I was wondering how big I could go with the
wheels and tires, to get more clearance, without hitting the fenders or causing performance problems, from turning the bigger
wheels. Appreciate any ideas...

I have made some modifications to my 96 King. If you are interested in them email me and I can send you the information.

I am sure you will enjoy your King.

I adjusted my shocks to the stiffest setting to make more ground clearance. Came from the dealer at next to softest. See if that helps before investing in new tires.

By the way, Eric Baatz is the forum's expert on Suzy KQs.

LOW GEAR-Im not exactly a rookie either when it comes to the KQ.I've owned two of them,a 87 and my bro's 97 KQ.I must say that I agree with you when it comes to the tires on the KQ.Probably one of the worst stock 4x4 tires currently on the market.I had the same problems as you with getting hung up and stuck. To remedy the problem,I kept the stock rims and went to Super Swamper Vampires on the 97 KQ.I kept the stock height and went to 12 inches wide in the rear and 10 inches wide in the front. There is absolutly NO comparison anymore. The 97 KQ goes just about thru the same mud as my 99 Sportsman. What a big differance.Hey,Eric is really the expert on this KQ thing though.===BILL

I appreciate the help guys..
I've already adjusted the shocks all the way up kclayd, it only gave me an extra inch of clearance... I haven't rode it since then, so I'm not sure if it'll have much affect on it or not.
I'm looking into a set of vampires, Bill. I'm thinking of going with a bigger wheel too, just to make sure it's got enough air under it..

You were right about ecbaatz, being an expert. He sent me some info. on it. I've already modified the diff. lock so it will engage in all the sub. trans. positions.

Thanks for all the help guys....

Expert?? Not sure where I got that title? All I have really done is try various modifications that others have made, added a few of my own and made a written procedure/documentation of them. That way I can send them to those that would like to try them out.

I am still a beginner when it comes to engine modifications and such, even suspension.

Bill has a lot more experience with King Quads. My 96 only has about 650 miles on it. Not even broken in yet. There is not a lot of places to ride in Connecticut.

I am more then willing to share my experiences and what I have done to my King. Just not sure I deserve the expert title.

Thanks everyone for your vote of confidence.

Low Gear, you could go with the bigger wheel, but I personally would'nt.The larger size will rob the allready undersized 280cc engine of some power. The Vampires are 4 ply tires and very hard.Dont worry a bit about them seperating from the factory rims or punctering. They are very good tires.====BILL

When you say a "bigger wheel", do you mean like an 11" wheel and a 12" wheel on the same diameter tire, i.e. 26" tire? If so, the overall height would be the same, wouldn't it? The only difference would be the amount of sidewall rubber. The tire that uses a 12" wheel would just have less sidewall and more stiffeness and less flex and roll. Isn't that right? I know on Porsche and Ferrari wheels and tires as you go from a 16" to an 18" wheel, the overall tire + wheel height is the same, but the sidewall of the tire is less and handles better due to less flex. The height of the tire is the same, but the "hole" in the tire is different. The only reason I say this is, I think a lot of peeople think putting a larger wheel on gives more ground clearance. But, in fact, it doesn't, because the tire can have the same height designation (say 26"), but is made to accept a different size wheel. I am right, aren't I. I have a headache now.

Low-gear,

I am extremely glad it worked out. I just wish I had thought of that option when I modified mine. If I get that far under the plastic again I may do that.

And you are welcome for the help. After all that is what the forum is all about, (now where do I send the bill for my consulting fees? (grin)).

>>I also wanted to tell ecbaatz, that I wired that neutral relay to a toggle switch that I mounted on the side. It works great. It works
factory until I engage the switch, then the neutral light comes on & it will crank in whatever gear it's in.

Thanks again for the information...<<
