Buy a new Z250 or trick out a 230
#1
I can buy a new Z250 for for my son for $3,500. But, I've been thinking. I could buy a tired late 80's Quadsport 230 and trick it out instead. I know I'd rather buy new, but I know he will want to have some mods done right from the get go, but I'm not going to spend any more.
So why not just get something used that we can fix up with aftermarket parts. If I get a QS 230 for $1,000 , that leaves me with $2,500 for repairs and extra mods like wheels, tires, body panels, etc. I've had 230's apart before and done cranks and pistons so that doesn't scare me. I'm thinking it could be a project bike we both could work on.
Believe me, the last thing I want to do is work on something instead of ride it, but it's a thought.
Any opinions?

If you can dump the money into an old 230 and not feel bad about it, for 3,500 you could have an impressive trail bike. You could fully rebuild/upgrade the motor, the suspension, and get new plastics, and make the bike look new. It would be faster than a new Z-250, and you could take pride in doing something yourself.

Just make sure you get the old sport with the clutch. I'm not sure what year those are but I know towards the 90's they started making auto clutch sports. Another good one would be a nice old Honda 250X(not the newer 250EX). Those were nice bikes back in the day and had a kicker and a clutch as well. I'm sure with 2,500 left after purchase you could make either quad sweet looking. I bet the old timers your son sees out on the trails would enjoy seeing one of those blasts from the past all cherried up.

deffinately the 230...i think its fun to have an old quad all tricked out...and have no one know what it is, then u have to explain it and everything. Then when u put 2500 bucks in it, u could have a damn nice bike. My old 230 i got for free, and put 600 bucks into it with plastics tires, ect. and i beat blasters, 300ex, etc.
