Z400 quiet pipe: with gains?
#1
know its probably been beat to death, but as a new z400 owner just wondering if a full exhaust mod, jet kit, k&n is worth it... want to stay quiet. Want to know brand of pipe and experiences. Good or bad....Thanks,Dingo

I am a new Z owner as well and I am going with the FMF Q series with power bomb header,K&N filter and jet kit. This setup will be louder than stock but still not ear shattering. I have heard that the power gains are worth the extra decibles.

Is it worth it? Depends. 4~6 HP on a 400cc motor is not cheap. The last artical I remember reading gave the thumbs up to both the R and E sieres White brothers pipe. (Low noise/good power.) All of the top pipes need intake and jetting mods to get the most out of them.
I've run my stock 04 vs a Yoshi slip on and a full titanium/carbonfiber yoshi. I always get the holeshot but always get passed when I hit 5th gear. I can live with that for now......

I just installed the Pro Circuit 496 on my Z... before it was just a gutted stock pipe.. I know I always said that was "just as good" but I'll never gut a stock pipe again.
The 496 is killer. Noise is about the same as a stocker with pea shooter and first baffle removed. But "poppier".. not just a loud groan. It's no where near any of the "non-quite" pipes as far as sound, and the power is excellent.
I spent a long timeon the phone with PC before purchasing this pipe. They claim it's really close to delivering the power of the PC T4.. very close. I believe them. I also asked about adding a new header, and they told me not to waste my time. Guess they didn't want to make more $$, but I just couldn't talk him into telling me a new header would do any good, even with cams, dyna ignition, modded intake, and 42mm carb. He said the silencer will be around 95% of the increase, and if I wanted an extra .005hp (mainly on top) to go for it if I felt like spending more money. He also told me a gutted stock pipe will produce less HP than a non-gutted one... AFter making the switch, I believe him!
It's a kick butt quiet pipe.

Great increase in power everywhere, but especially on the LOW END, where the stock bike is lame! K&N with Outerwears, FMF PowerBomb Header and Ti-4 Muffler.

The Yoshi slip-on is a really good pipe. Just a tad loud. I think it will pass the 96dB test but probably not the Oregon dunes 93dB. Remove the air snorkel, add a CDI, jet accordingly and you have a significant increase without a lot of dough.

i have the white bros 3 series, and it is not very loud, it has the low thump, but is nothing to a few other pipes i have heard, and it offers good power gains. the ct pipe is also very good and quiet. the hmf is loud, but if you get the quiet core insert, it drops it to 91 db, one of the quietest on the market.
