Default 88 Suzuki LT300E Overheating and Locking Up

I have just purchased a 1988 Suzuki LT300E. If I run it hard, it will either stop, or if I turn it off, I cannot restart the ATV. Starter sounds like the battery is dead, and the pull cord, when pulled, stays out without retracting. When I allow the unit to set for about 20-30 minutes it will then start as if nothing was wrong.
Oil level is fine, and clean. I am thinking that the cylinder walls are possibly scored, causing excessive friction.
Any one with ideas?
