Is there any way to bypass the decompression lever on a 87 230s. Also if not, how easy is it to install a new assembly on the head? I'am learning as I go. There is really nothing about it in the repair book. thanks alot.

Do you need the compression release? If not just take off the cable and the perch.

well I guess that is kinda my question. I was told that you had to have it to release the compression to allow you kick the motor.
thanks

djdm, the compression release cracks a valve open on the first compression stroke when attempting manual start of your engine. Its purpose? Allowing sufficient inertia to be built up in the rotating hardware (flywheel, crank, etc.) BEFORE that next critical valves-closed compression stroke, insuring adequate compression and improving probability of starting.

Do you NEED a compression release? Depends. Depends upon your own size and strength, and the leverage built into the manual starting mechanism, as well as the engine's propensity to "kick-back" with bone-breaking force.

If you're weighing the need or the efficacy of the compression release, I'd recommend you try manual-starting that 230 without it. Now, whddaya think?
