LT 500 Pipe Recommendations
#1
Hi all,
I have a 1989 Quadzilla in full rebuild mode. I used a FMF Fatty for years and liked it, and am looking for a new pipe/silencer combo (spark arrested) that gives great midrange power and doesn't leak at the pipe/silencer junction. . Any opinions out there on pipes? The FMF chrome job sucks, though the power range seemed good. Thanks alot!

well hiper ive ran both first i ran a paulturner pipe and silencer until the welds cracked on the pipe and i found a fmf on ebay and got it personally i think a paul turner is a much better pipe all the way around and thats why I just ordered a knew system from duncan racing. but i run ported and polished cylinder with about 150 pounds comp with 110 race fuel.

I have a 1988 LT500 that had an FMF pipe on it. I run 100LL avgas at 180psi and had detonation problems at the top of a long hill at the dunes. I tried higher octane racing fuel but still had the same problem. I bought a Paul turner pipe last summer and the detonation problems dissapeared. With the FMF I had to be in the power band in third gear before I hit the hill. With the Paul Turner I can go through the whoops in 2nd and shift into 3rd on the hill (my son, who is lighter, can shift into 4th). The Paul Turner has much more mid range an a little more top end but the FMF has a little more bottom end.

Thanks for the infor guys...I am considering all info. I still have the FMF but have seen many Paul Turner pipes... I'd lie to run it in the mid range most of the time. Just had it solidly rebuilt back to near-stock by Trinity, with all the strengthening mods. Sounds like the Turner pipe is better overall with some low-end loss though. How much less low end? I do love that 'four stroke grunt' capability of the 500 with the FMF.
One last question: What silencers will mount sraight up to either pipe and seal fine?
Thanks!

LRD is the best because you can tune it to a certain extent, but they don't make it anymore (to my knowledge.) Paul Turner is your best bet. Bill's is also very good. I would use their silencers with the respective pipes - PT pipe/silencer combo, or Bill's pipe/silencer combo. I'm just sealing around the pipe/silencer with some red hi-temp silicone, just wiping it in between that small gap where the pipe and silencer connect to help keep the gases from coming out. I also put a bunch of hi-temp on the cylinder flange where the pipe connects to the cylinder, and I've heard (mine's almost done, haven't started it up yet) that there won't be a problem with the exhuast coming out there either.

LRD or paul turner are your best choices. somebody on here said that Ronnies had the LRD for the zilla in their paper catolog but i dont know for sure. Duncan is still making the Paul Turner pipe. I have a DG on mine cause thats what it came with but everybody and every fourm has had the consensus that LRD and PT are leaps and bounds above the FMF and DG pipes in performance on any range of power.
