Yeah, I tried starting a fire in camp with it and it didn't burn.

I just had to test it. Took a can of WD40 today lit a lighter, sprayed the can towards the lighter, and wham, a blow torch in a can. Looks like it burns to me!

I just saw that and looked it up, you right some companies do make some of their starting fluids lubricated now. Don't know much about them but guess these new lubricated starting fluids should be OK

bsb64
You are right.
I just tried it, yep blowtorch. They must have changed it AGAIN because a few years back it did NOT burn and I was told they changed it (but it used to burn before that) does this make any sense?

Just trying to help and looks like I am batting 0 here!

Starting fluid is NOT good and has the potential to be VERY harmful. Remember, parts are expensive, tuning and maintenance is not. Research, not opinion.

Okay, lets settle it,
Has anybody ever had problems with starting fluid, Anybody? I havn't and no one I know has. Reseach doesn't compare to real life.
Sounds like everyone just thinks that it is bad, but never had any bad experiences.
Keep in mind I am promoting sparse use, not to use it as a crutch. I would much rather not use, but will if I have to.
I have used the stuff for over ten years on everything like motorcycles, cars, quads, racing Go-karts, etc. 4 and 2 stroke. No problems.
I totaly agree that tuning it right is the way to go.

Oh, and I went and retried the WD-40 flame test. Of course it works in the garage, but not when I need it to start a fire. Figures

Take some dirty, greasy tools and spray 'em with ether, and see how good the oil gets rinsed off. That'll give you a good idea as to what it does to the oil on a cylinder wall.

I know a couple of people who have destroyed everything from a 3 cylinder tractor to a 6.5 Turbo Diesel....real life. Anything other than premix in a 2 stroke cylinder is asking for it. I don't want or need the accelerated wear that you WILL realize with S.F. if used constantly. I've even got a label on my truck visor warning against its use. I speak only of the NON-lubricated ether type starting fluid as I'm not familiar with the lubricated type. It personally cost me the top end of my Scrambler 400. That's called a store-bought lesson where I come from.

To answer the question: I don't recommend its use if at all possible.

Maybe we could get Fasternu to bottle up a little something after he has some Chinese food. That could be TOO explosive though.
