found a great site about some dude that cut open 5 different oil filters. The Fram was the crappy one with cardboard parts, the others had pretty much the same filter elements and guts.

Having been a full time tech for nearly 20 years I figure I've replaced about as many filters as anybody. You can't see inside the spin on type unless you cut them open but many older ATV's and motorcycles have cartridge type that are plain to see when you replace them. I'm a firm believer in OE filters. I've seen too many collapsed and glue undone Fram and Emgo units to EVER put them in any of my machines. A while back there was even a recall on certain Fram spin on filters that fit Gold Wing motorcycles. The threads fit too loosely and they were BLOWING off the attaching bosses!! Do you suppose any of the local auto parts stores that sold Fram filters even knew about this recall? None that I talked to did or at least they didn't admit it. I don't find that very reassuring.

The great thing about these forums is the wide diversity of people and info. Aksafari, thats a great site.

I stick with the suzuki filter. I figure they know whats best for my machine. It cost $15 but I only change my oil 2-3 times a year and the extra expense is worth the piece of mind.

Good thread. Has anyone heard of the "EMGO" filter? I got a deal on 5 of them. After reading this thread- I think I might toss them and take eiger 2's advice. And, 581-how much pro-long do you add? I use prolong in my vehicles, and add a full qt.

Scottsperformance.com for some stainless steel re-useable units that have some very impressive filtering capabilities.

Default USE A GOOD OIL FILTER

I use "EMGO" filters in my eiger. I purchased them from Rockey Mountain ATV for $5. I have also used NAPA filters in it also. I change my oil every 300-400 miles with Amsoil motorcycle oil. The oil has always been clean with no junk in it. When I change my oil in the next couple of weeks I'll cut the filter apart and see how it looks.
