Default LT250r: is the regulator needed to run the quad?

I'm fixing an 86 LT250r. It's my first quad, but I'm good with electrical stuff and old Volkswagens. I was wondering if the regulator is needed to run the bike or if it's only needed if you have lights? if it's not needed do I need to ground any specific wire instead? My bike was originally used as a parts bike for a little while, so the wiring is a mess, but I have everything but the regulator.

Thanks for any help... I searched the old posts before posting this, but didn't see this question asked ever.

My brother has an 86 Lt250r and his has no headlight or tailight. He also does not have a regulator. As far as I can tell the regulator is only to protect the lights or bulbs.

I ran mine with the lighting regulator disconnected until I reinstalled my headlight. A new wiring harness is only $35 bucks.

thanks everyone... I now have spark... now I have to address the no gas issue... my carb isn't sharing it with the cylinder for some reason.... maybe I should just rebuild it to be safe.
