'87 quadracer probs...

hey guys I just joined the forum today and am anxious to learn and contribute.
now my problem, my lt250r has ran great in the past but recently started burning through plugs. Finally this weekend at the dunes (moses lake, WA) after 2 plugs in 2 hours now it just wont start at all, even with a new plug. I've been running about 28:1 with golden spectro oil, trying to conserve my aging motor. I have done no work at all to this quad, other than an oil change in the year that I have had it. Also it's been running hot and did overheat some this weekend but that seems to be a common problem with the lt250's (or is it?) Any advice on what to check would help, I already ordered new reeds, maybe that will help? What do y'all think? I am probably going to put some money into my beast so let me have the low down on some ideas........thanx.........scotty

Mine have never run hot. I'm in Fl and rode them hard in 90+ degrees also weigh 245lbs. So I would say they have pretty good cooling. I run all mine on cheap WallMart oil at 20:1 with no plug problems. You could have a bad coil causing weak spark letting your plugs foul easier. It could also be bad plugs. Are you using NGK (or NKG or whatever they are) plugs? I got a whole box (4 plugs) once that were all bad. I got 30-60 minutes per plug. I couldnt figure it out until I ran out of new plugs and put the original one back in that I bought those to replace. Then it ran fine for the rest of the weekend.

The overheating could be due to a bad waterpump. Check ur jetting. Or maybe your carb is bad. use "Engine Ice" for coolant it is the best. you might be sucking air(i think that causes overheating).

Thanks for the info guys, I've heard that the plug fouling, not running, etc., could possibly be bad rings, the quad still seems to have compression on the downstroke of the kickstarter, but I really don't know. Also if I have too much water in the radiator will it push water/steam out the tube? I won't be able to even look at it til this weekend at least. Not in any hurry really I'd like to fix everything I can now that it' s broken down anyway. Appreciate the help........scotty

I think your problem is because your pre-mix has not enough oil. 28:1 isn't a whole lot of oil, so the parts get too much fricton and it over heats. I use 32:1 pre-mix with YAMALUBE. Its only like 3 or 4 bucks a bottle, but it works really good. Or maybe your octane is too high, if it is, i would run lower octane until you get enough mods to your motor to run high octane.
