Oregon Dunes Report, 2004 Eiger's first big trip
#1
Well, finished the breakin period on my Eiger, changed the oil, and went to the Dunes... It was blue skies, 75 degrees, no wind, and a hell of a good time!
There was NO DUNE I COULDN'T CLIMB! And those of you who've been to the Oregon Dunes know there are some GIANTS there. I'd hit the bottom in 5th gear WOT, maybe 45mph, soak up a few whoops, then haul ***** up the face. If it was a super huge dune and really steep, I'd be in 2nd gear at the crest, but I'd still catch air with all 4 tires. Never had an over-heat light, although I did hear some ticking from the lifters at the end of the trip, probably due to the fact that I haven't checked the clearances yet. Only when hot, but definitely lifter tick. No big deal.
JUMPING! Oh yeah, baby! MuddyEiger can testify that this thing handles jumps very well for a heavy utility quad. There were some dune jumps where I flew at least 18-20 feet, at a foot or two in the air. There were some sweet dunes for jumping with a crisp lip, soft sand, and a sloped landing.
BUT, I'm a jackass and all three trips out onto the dunes I left w/o the camera... SO it's 'until next time' for new ones in the gallery.
All in all, I was very impressed. Even those little trail-traps next to water, you know, the ones where there's only space at the bottom of a dangerously steep hill to barely turn around, were do-able. Just get her rapped-out in 2nd gear 4wd, high range, and it would power up ANYTHING.
Oh yeah, aired down to approx 2psi at all four corners. I rode HARD and never had a problem with beads unseating. Spectators said my tires went virtually flat on the landings of some jumps, but I didn't feel it.
That little air gauge that's in the tool kit doesn't really register below 2psi, because on some of my tires I supposedly had 'zero' psi.
I registered 68 miles on the trip meter on Saturday alone!
So, now it's valve adjust time, and back to the dunes, or hit the trails as soon as possible!
ps, after coming home with my new Eiger a month ago, my wife just rolled her eyes when she heard how much it cost ($5000 even), and I didn't hear the end of it for 2 weeks. NOW she wants one! After driving it some at the dunes, she's addicted!

Sounds like a great trip!!
"if only we could do this every weekend" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!
Thats whet we said after our first week last year, and Dam if we didn't! We rode all the time and our machines ran flawlessly ever time. I remember when we would go riding with 8 machines and at the end of the trip only 4 were running. Then spend a couple weekends putting them all back together before we could have another weekend.
