Default Which two-stroke to buy??

Well i am trying to make my mind up on which quad to buy.

Here are my two options

92 lt250r

the good:
-150lbs compression
-FMF fatty pipe
-new cascade seat cover
-Runs solid(couldnt get it to idle, but just pulled out of winter storage and need to be played with)
-Tight front end

the bad:
-Needs rear tires
-Plastics are sun faded
-Very minimal amount of rust on the frame. (looks like it was kept outside for a period in its life)

Price $2500 CDN

OR

86 Trx 250r

the good:
-New top end(with recepts)
-Runs good (started right up out of winter storage)
-Know the current owner

the bad:
-Ratty looking
-The Frame needs paint (bit of rust, faded, paint chipping)
-Back plastics faded, front cracked
-Needs seat cover
-Small oil leak(looks like an easy fix)
-Needs front sprocket cover, and mounts made for the cover
-Needs rims and tires
-Needs general tlc

Price $1500 CDN

Well what do you guys think is the better deal. Not affraid of the work, just dont want to loose alot of money into a quad.

Also need a quad that can be modded to spank a banshee, yfz450

I will not be jumping or racing, just want a play bike, that will be plenty fast and decent trail manners(for a 2stroke)

Any opinions???

Some say the 86trx head design was poor, other say it was faster, others say it cracks, yada. Think with the LT, ur getting a machine that is 6 years newer, and by being the last year, had all the bugs worked out. If the R was an 88-89, i would say go for it, but since its condition is poor stay away. Just think, it would cost you probably about the 1000 to fix the R up to the LT R's condition, and then you still have an 86. Also, its best not to buy from ppl u arent good friends with, because sometimes people can get pissed if the machine falls apart on them. Just a thought.

If I had to pick out of those 2 choices I'd have to say the TRX becuse the LT250R you described is worth about 1500$ tops and will not likely ever be worth more than 2500$ even if it was like new. The TRX however is probably worth more than 1500$ even as it is and if you fix it up its value would probably go up at a higher rate than the amount of $s you put in it just becuse its a 250R.

In general though I would pass up the LT for sure becuse thats just way too much to pay for any but the very nicest out there. I would have to see the R in person and would only condsider it it because you could likely put 1000$ into it and make a 1000$ on resale. Unless your interested in the R as an investment I would keep looking. I gave 1400$ for my 91 LT in FL where prices are high and it has more mods and is in better shape than the one you described.

I just noticed that your prices are Canadian. Therefore the LT might be worth looking at. I dont know the exchange rate or what quads go for in Canada but I think 2500 Canadian is less in US $. If thats the case then the R might be an even better investment but I still wouldn't buy it otherwise.

According to the website I used, the LT would be $1860 US and the trx would be $1115 US. The trx is probably be worth 1000 more than the LT if they're in equal condition. The LT sounds to be in alot better shape and is probably the better deal.

ok the oil leak i spoke of is where the clutch cable goes into the engine. I am guessing it needs an oil seal. How hard is this job?
