Always take care of the chassis protection and safety first, before you move on to the engine! What I do on any new bike, in this order, as finances allow:

Full chassis and Swingarm Skids, Nerf Bars, Bumper, Wheels and Tires, Steering Stabilizer, Handlebars.

Vented Airbox Lid (http://www.ehsracing.com/), K&N with Outerwears, Header and Muffler, and of course a Rejet. (For reliability, I don't mess with the engine internally, untill it needs a rebuild.)

Aftermarket Suspension and A-Arms.

What they said. First protection then you can think about getting a pipe or other goodies.

You have some good advice there. Protect your machine first. Then you can buy all the goodies!
