Default more Z400 probs

ok....few weeks ago i had prob with the Z running....wouldn't stay running unless the fuel petcock was in the pri position.....took it apart and cleaned everything out and checked all the lines and everything.....only the fuel petcock had a lil dirt in it......rode fine for about 10 hrs and started acting it....took it up tot he dealer and had them look it over....they seen what i was doing but could find nothing wrong but they also cleaned it......rode for about 10 more hrs and it happened again today....not as bad as b4 but still happening

i now have a cover over the petcock so dust can't get in that way......there is a hose under the seat that runs down to the petcock....is it possible dirt/water is getting in there?

i know under the seat seems to get really dirty/wet from riding......it seems to be the only place it could be entering.

i just need suggestions cuz ive got 40 hrs or so on the bike and have had to clean it 3 times and its becoming a big PITA.

any comments/thoughts are greatly appreciated

also would it be possible to get rid of the new type of petcock and go back to the old style ?

in prime it susposedly bypasses the tubing and stuff to the petcock?

i just wanna get it running and not have to keep cleaning it and stuff and having the dealer tell me there is nothing wrong when something is and its not running right in on position on the petcock

The petcock works with engine vacuum in the "on" position. Prime by-passes the diaphram in the petcock valve. Fuel always flows through the screen on the petcock on/prime/res.
If it will not flow in "on" the diapham is bad or you have a vacuum leak. The vac leak will also cause poor running.

i couldn't find a leak so im gonna assume the diaphram is bad......i found a manual petcock for the bike so im gonna order it and get rid of the crappy vacuum system.

right now im just running on prime and using "on" as off

Just out of curiousity, did you check the breather tube on the fuel cap? Mine got clogged with mud where it plugs into the dash, and ran like yours seems too.

i had that sort of problem...never leave it on prime to run tho..it makes your engine run very rich and can cause more problems....after a fair amount of riding...such as your ten hours...the idle screw gets very loose....check that and even tape it if u have to..i had the same sort of problem...but my older bro is ver mechanical and figured it out...
