Excessive Fuel Usage?
#1
SCENARIO: I purchased a new Twin Peaks about 3 weeks ago, and I have put 75 miles on it so far. I have ridden the TP 4 times.......on the first 3 trips, I went about 20 miles each trip and used one or two bars worth of fuel each trip. On the last trip, I rode about 7.5 miles........ON A HALF TANK!! Needless to say, I had to turn around and get back to the house. By that time, I managed to use 5 of the 7 bars. I don't smell any fuel leakage, and there aren't any signs of fuel puddling on the ground when stopped.
I run 89 octane & I ride virtually the same terrain, speed, and style.
What do you guys think may be the problem?

Yep.....I always top it off before I go riding, so I KNOW that I had a full tank to begin with. When I got home, I loaded it up and took it to the local gas station and filled the tank up to see if the fuel gauge was incorrect..........I had to put 2.7 gallons in the 4.6 gallon tank.

I can't think of anything mechanical that could be going wrongother then the fuel guage not being accurate. But, if your filling it up and verifying the readings. I take it, it's running fine? When you fill it up, your watching it fill to the brim? Because that's a big change in mileage Outside of that, and what youv'e already have checked, I'm stumped Good Luck, Keep me posted on what you find out.

1)Check to make sure that you arent locked into 4WD.
2)Open the airbox and make sure something wasnt put on wrong or something fishy with the airbox.
3)Smell your oil dipstick real good to make sure its not bypassing the rings and dumping into the oil.
4)Make sure the choke isnt staying on or is stuck
If none of the above, you must be running way rich.. and will have to rejet.
Unless you have a leak.. which u say u dont.

Thanks for the various insights!
After riding yesterday (Labor Day), I think the cause of my troubles was the quality of gasoline. I topped off the tank with 93 octane after the excessive usage ride I mentioned in my first post....instead of 89........and almost 35 miles later, I still had 3 of the 7 bars available. I didn't do anything different except use a higher octane gas. Go figure....that much of a difference in performance. ??

The different octane shouldnt have mattered at all. The only explanation I can see is that you got some bad gas.

maddog.......
You are probably right. I keep a 5 gallon can of fuel around for the lawn mower, pressure washer, and ATV. I hadn't used any from the can in my TP until I went riding the day in question. I reckon it loses it's quality if it sits for any period of time.
Thanks for the heads up!
