Default Shaving LT250R head

So I got a '85 LT250R, gonna shave the head, how much is normally taken off? I don't need to run AVGAS but if I have to I will.. meaning that if I take a little too much off it isn't a big dealio to me. I raised the exhaust port a little bit while I was porting it out so I have to do something to gain some compression back.

I shaved the head on my 86 LT250 .010" and ran it on 87 octane for a year with no problems before I sold it. I ran it on 93 octane at first but then accidentally put in 87 becuase I was feuling up my truck at the same time. It made noticeably more power on 87 but didnt run any hotter so I stayed with 87.

I took 25 thousandths off of my 88 I had, But i ran VP gas in it which was 113 octane and boy did it run. If your lookin to run pump gas then I'd only take about 10 or 15 thousandths off.

i had an ftz out of frame drag pipe. to be honest i wasnt that impressed with it. my bike was putting out about 70hp and i added the pipe and there was no change in performance, just noise. i noticed on your other post you asked about 500 buileders. that is a tough call as there is hardly anyone that really knows how to make a 500 run great and be reliable. make sure you use a steel base gasket, o-ring the head and use the bigger head studs. also use a newer style flywheel.

well, My brother took .040" off his and it only had 150lbs compression, so he still ran pump gas (super)

I was thinking of .050" which looks about where the squish starts, if I do that should I cut a new squish into the head also?

gsxrquadracer1000, what did you all have done to yours, and i never seen a metal base gasket for a 500. Are you talking like a copper one?

you can get the metal base gasket from trinity. you definitely want to use one. i had a full drag port, advanced timing, custom made boyesen reed cage, everything was matched, custom intake boot, shaved, o-ringed head, custom pipe and a huge carb. if you start pumping up your 500 make sure that you also reinforce the cylinder where the bolts come thru from the case.
