Well, just take whichever bike you prefer and make it what you want.

I have a good running 87 LT. Whoops up on piped Z400's.

I also have a YFZ. It KILLS my LT. But I have been beaten (and bad!) by nicely built but not extravigant Z400's.

This is in the context of racing up sand dunes.

My LT is going down the road for a modern, well handling, non-vibrating 4 stroke Z400.

 

I ran against a stock z400 uphill on asphalt and he just walked away from me, twice.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif[/img] I was struggling to keep the front end down while he just hooked up and went. He jumped out a couple lengths in front of me off the line and stayed there all the way to top gear. Time to get the jug ported...

 

well sam id say try an 87 but still getting my azz handed to me by someone just not the z400 lol all in fun i ride to ride.there will always be faster but hey i got 1800 into mine and have beaten and been beaten by some high dollar machines. ice is coming soon whooo hooo

 

Of course there is the cost factor. I spent 2 grand on my 87 LT in 1991, and it was in showroom condition. Just spent a little on it since then on top ends, porting, pipe, eventually did new plastic etc. Might have $3500 as a total net cost to date. Got 14 seasons on that thing so that's $250 per year. Pretty reasonable riding expense.

Plus I can sell it now for about $2500 so then my total riding cost/maintenance/depreciation for 14 years would be $1000 or $71 per year. It don't get any better than that!

I enjoy riding my quad and am not concerned if it can out drag another quad that is 18 years newer and costs 3 times as much. I ran against the Z for ***** and giggles and cause I was curious to know how mine compares to the newer bikes. I know my bike is not the fastest, but I've owned it longer than some of these kids that post here have been alive, and the engine's only been rebuilt once.
