modifying '86 LT250R frame
#1
First of all I wanted to say hi. I joined these forums in 2001, but lost my password over a year ago. Anyway, it's good to be back.
Recently I purchased a completely stock '86 LT250R as a project quad. There's a lot of work to be done, including sandblasting the frame and adding gussets to it.
But what I was wondering was: Would it be possible to create new front shock mounts on the frame so I can use the longer travel '87 and up shock? Is the same thing possible for the A-arm mounts (since aftermarket A-arms are alot easier to find for the '87)? Has any of you already done this mod? If so, can you give me some tips? Also, can anybody give me some tips about which parts of the frame need gussets or other reinforcements?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

I don't know the specifics of modifying the frame to fit the longer shocks, but it can be done. There is a company called HSD Racing that does that modification to the older LT's. Do a search on the internet to find the website and they have all kinds of useful information there.
As far as where to gusset, I remember the frame near the upper shock mounts on my old '86 racer cracking. I had to gusset it there and also support the footpegs due to them bending from jumping. Hope this helps.

I should be receiving my HSD A-arms, front shock bracket and frame gussets this week. I have already done some reinforcing to my frame which you can see in my pictures. I'll post more pics once the new front end is on.
