if your looking just for a good reliable quad than I would get the 400ex. IMO
but I prefer the Z400. its faster and has better suspension and I didnt feel comfortable on the 400ex

03 models were notorious for weak axles and frames, but supposedly fixed for 04. Engine wise they are all pretty strong.

I think the Z400 is a lot better overall then the EX just because it has better power and suspension. My buddy has a 2000 400EX and the only problems were the rear bearings so far and that was 2 years ago when he got it. I havn't had any problems besides stripping a couple bolts which was my fault and a couple chains and sprockets because I had no good greese. But they are both really fun and you can't go wrong with either bike. Oh yah my buddy with the EX wants to know why his clutch is so hard to pull in compared to my clutch? And why his throttle is harder to push in the mine also. Other then that his bike is bullet proof and mine is becoming bulletproof also. So go by your gut feeling.

Both good machines.
The Z400 has more power and is liquid cooled liquid cooled.

Im not sure how old/experienced you are, but a 450 is also a great choice. You wouldnt regret the extra money spent.

If you're getting used the Z has reverse. Only this year's EX has reverse. It also kinda bothers me that they just copied the R's plastic. Both are great quads though.
