the 87 takes larger reeds, so if they were to big than you have an 88-92 cylinderhead is the same as far as i know from 87-92

The reeds i bought were too small, which leads me to believe that i have a 87 cyl, so i have the correct piston, so now i need to figure out what my problem is.

Well. An 87 piston in an 88 cylinder or vice versa,is not a good idea,it might run,but your port timing has to be friggin terrible. The piston skirt on the 87 is way way diferent than the 88.The 88 has a large "U" shape cut into it on the intake side, the 87 does not. All the ports on the 87/88 cylinders are diferent. THe 87 has a larger intake port, and there will be "5" bolts that hold the reeds on.The 88 uses "6" bolts for the reeds, and is way smaller.the heads from 87/88 are also slightly different. I would seriously suggest fixing this.if the porting is bad, then you might be getting a lot of carbon build up as well. I only know this because i have a complete 87 motor and a complete 88 motor in my bedroom right now,and a pile of spare parts.

Is it at all possible the piston was installed 180 degrees backward?? Arrow pointing toward the intake, and not at the exh.?? Would it even run that way???
