Friend of mine has an 04 Z that has only been at the dunes. The thing will crank but no start. With it in prime, choked and full throttle it will try to start but nothing.

I have replaced plug. Pulled and cleaned carb ( it did have alot of sand in it), Cleaned air filter, and have checked spark (it has spark).

If we pull it with another quad and dump the clutch, it will start and run fine. After it sits over night it will crank and and crank. Put the choke on it only cranks. Give full throttle and it will try and start. If we pull it, it will start every time. Also after we get it running with choke off and we slowly give it choke it will die. We have to hold the throttle till it warms up.

I have done a search and found nothing. Any ideas ?

 

IDLE MIXTURE CIRCUIT IS MISADJUSTED OR PLUGGED.

 

Which one is that ?

 

Sand in the carb??? How did that happen? Sell it quick.

check valve adjustments, have seen similar problems that you are telling. found intakes had worn and lost clearance. if you had sand in carb then there has definitely been some in motor. this can cause valve and seat wear.

 

Valve adjustments are fine, compression is fine. Like stated above it will run fine with no probs. once its push started and warmed up. After its warmed up and ridin it will start every time. After it sits for a couple hours or over night it will not start. It will crank but no start.

I have :
Cleaned starter, main and pilot jets.
Cleaned all fuel lines.
Cleaned petcock valve.
Cleaned diaphram, piston valve, needle, and starter (choke) plunger.
Replaced plug.
Replaced battary.
Replace all fuel in tank.
Added inline fuel filter.
Cleaned air filter.
Cleaned intake hose.
Cleaned breather hose.

 

Please tell us how it managed to get sand in the carb. This is important, and not just a joke! If there is a LEAK IN THE INTAKE it will make the bike run lean, and might give symptoms like you are describing.

Or, did somebody just forget to oil the filter? Are you running a K&N? Sand is some of the most abrasive stuff there is (sandpaper!).

 

It is piped, jeted and has a K&N. Lid is off and the snork is off. I also noticed the his braether tube that supposed ti go in the snorkel is just hanging there out in the wide open. I am pretty sure that is where most of the sand came from, along with lack of maintence.
