WOT cut out... z400
#1
Yesterday I took my quad out to some radar runs on a lake by my house. I noticed when I am riding in 4th and 5th gear WOT for an extended amount of time that my quad cuts out for a little while then all of a sudden it will come back like normal. It acts as if the float bowl is being sucked dry and after I am off the gas for 15 seconds it will come back like normal.
Has anyone else had this problem with there quad? my mods are listed below. Float level is stock. I'm running a 25 pilot, 160 main, and about 3 turns out. It was pretty warm out yesterday also. Any Idea's?
thanks,
chuck

i noticed a similiar problem on my z400, it would only cut out when i had it pinned in 4th or 5th. I couldnt figure out what was happening, then as more time went on, it rapidly got worse and any time, any gear, i woudl try to go over 3/4 throttle it would cut out. it turned out that when i had cealend my k&n airfilter i had put too much oil on it when i put it back and this caused it to clog extremely fast. Its an easy test to just clean the airfilter and see if that fixes it before you do anything

I cleaned the air filter about an hour before this started happening. It has did this before but I normally don't run it WOT for any extended period of time so it doesn't matter. If I let the quad sit for 15 - 30 seconds after it cuts out it will run just like normal for a little longer then it does it again. If I just ride normal (not at WOT) it is good all of the time, no problems. Could it maybe be the filters in my tank?
Also does anyone know where I can get an aftermarket cam chain? I've been looking but I can't find a place that sells them.
thanks

Try jetting up on the main jet.............. as for the cam chain , i havent seen a after market one. But if you are hearing a ticking from your cam chain, it s from the hotcams. Your cam chain is still probably good, believe me i went threw this . I had my cam chain replaced because i thought that was the reason for casuing the tick, but 350.00 dollars later i find out that its just the cams that make that tick. You can ask any one who have hot cams .

I agree, mine also tick.
One time I was doing some WOT runs and I had the same problem. I found there wasnt enough gas in the tank. It didnt look that low, I put some gas in the tank and have not had any problem since.
IMO, your jetting isnt the problem. Im runing a 165mj, 25 pilot, 2.5 turns out.

I guess it could have been that I was a little low on gas. I filled up at the beggining of the day but I was going around a circle track on the ice when it was doing that. As far as my cam chain, my ACT is nearing it's limit. Plus I have to rebuild my waterpump pretty soon here anyways so I figured I would replace that while I had the clutch cover off. I'm also going to check my valves again.
I also noticed that the valve specs for hotcams and the valve specs from suzuki are differant than each other. They are close to the same but hotcams specs doesn't let them get as loose as suzuki's.
Should I follow hotcams reccomendations?
Another thing is my quad doesn't seem to have as much power as I would think in the top of 4th gear and through 5th. I have a 13 tooth front sprocket on the front (I think stock is 14 if I remember right...) I have to check my main jet to see if that is off.
I raced 2 predators with pipes, a yfz 450 (stock), and a arctic cat (?dvx?) 400 (stock) on saturday on the ice. I beat the arctic cat but we were pretty much dead even on the top end, I had a slight lead. I had a big lead on the yfz till I was topped out then he slowly walked by me. The 2 predators were about the same, I had them till about mid 5th gear and they walked by me faster than the yfz. I wasn't really impressed with the topend of my quad. I don't know if it was my gearing or if my main jet is that far off. I'm going to try to figure that out soon.

its probably your gearing cause my friend went down on the gearing in the front on his 400ex(piped etc). anyway before he changed his gearing his top end was faster now on top end we are about the same.

there is an after market cam chain, its the did 3/4 and 4/5 cam chain. call advantage cycle, 515/961-5699 he has the 3/4 in stock.
I have gone through 2 stock cam chains and I know because I ran out of adjustment on the cam adjuster. I got a maunal one for the season till I move to a HD chain..
I'm also running 13.5:1 compression with both hotcams, porting, kibblewhite springs, she runs strong.
