Popping! Z400 Jetting Issues... help me please

Default Popping! Z400 Jetting Issues... help me please

Well anyways, I ordered an Alba Stage 3 jet kit. It was cheaper than a full dynojet kit and should be here this week. I'm going to instal the needle and pilot jet, and leave the 175 Mikuni jet on there that HMF provided. Anyone disagree with any of this? I'll post how it works out by the end of the week.

Default Popping! Z400 Jetting Issues... help me please

The Alba jet kit came in yesterday and I worked on the Z this morning. I decided to change one thing at a time, so I would know which was the cause. I put in the 25pilot, and took out the 175 main from HMF and compared it to the Alba 155. I'm guessing they're both Mikuni jets? The 175 from HMF had a larger hole, so I left it in there. Put it abck together, put it on prime while I was hooking everything else back up. Bam, started up first try like a champ. I was like dayum, it didn't start this good stock. Let it idle for a min and took it for a spin. Not a single pop. Neither accelerating, nor deccelerating. Felt a tad bit hesitant when I gave it full throttle, so I removed the air box lid and she was snappy as he!!. Still no pops, crackles. etc. I think we found the problem, and I think it's fixed. THanks for the help guys.

By the way, I have the mixture screw at 2.5 with a 25 pilot.

Glad you got-r-dun! So did you only change the pilot jet? Or put in a different needle too? What size was the stock pilot you took out? Mine runs fine now I'm just trying to think of something to do to it next. Maybe get rid of my occasional "popping".

So what was it that was making your quad pop?? Did you end up chaing the pilot jet for richer?

Good for you, strubby, And youre right...the only circuit that matters , at closed throttle is the pilot circuit, the needle circuit wont effect a thing until about 1/4 throttle. Carbs use different circuits for different throttle openings...rpms mean nothing. If the problem occurs at closed throttle, its either the pilot circuit or the starter circuit(choke).
Usually the needle circuit doesnt need much help, its somewhat self adjusting on a cv type carb.

Thanks hondabuster. Yea kawzuki/MURDR, I only changed the Pilot jet. I also got a different needle, but chose to try just the pilot first, as it was only off-throttle popping. Stock is 22.5 (so I read on Alba's site) and I moved up to a 25 pilot, from Alba's Stage III jet kit. Basically the same as replacing the main, but with the 25, you'll be able to tune the mixture at idle a bit more than with the stock pilot jet. With it running right, it pulls much harder from gear to gear. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

yeah once i get my engine back i will try i larger pilot jet.
