Default just got an 87lt250R

Hey guys, i just got a Lt250R 87 model... its all done up, wiht a .10stroker crankm (this is what i was told) ( it also doesnt run well on anything under 104 octane).20+ wiesco piston, i guess it has reeds, and a powervalve to (im a newbie to 2 strokes) also has a full borelli suspension system out back, FMF gold series fatty, nerf bars etc etc etc.. I raced agaisnt my cousings built 660 raptor, and his stock yzf450r i beleive it is, and i literally made him look like he was s tanding still and im not small guy, (200lbs) is this normal for this type of bike, this thing runs like a RAPED APE, i think from 0-70 its faster than my GSXR, i think i got a good deal on it as well.. guy took my 91 katana for it, and gave me the quad, and 1500$.

Next question... is thier any way to wire up lights for it, i would like headlights for sure, and if possible tail lights.. Its a high compression motor, and im running Amsoil pro series 2000 synthetic in it, but it only calls for 50:1, and i've been mixing it 40:1 because 50 seems AWFULLY lean.. what shoudl i be mixing this at.. thanks much !!!

Sounds like you've got a pretty seriously built LT! First thing you need is a shop manual. A compression test will give you an idea of the state of the top end (piston, rings and cylinder). The bike originaly came with lights and with the wiring diagram in the shop manual you can see how much of the electrical system is still there. DON'T try to run it on pump gas cause it will predetonate and possibly break something. 40:1 is a good ratio, that's what I run.

I just took the bike out to my uncles and his son races moto cross bikes, he doesnt think its a super hi comp motor, he thinks i should be able to run 93 or at most a 112/93 mix. its running pretty rich on the gas right now... the bike is super hard to kick start, no harder than my cousins 125cc yahma dirt bike with i think a 12/1 piston in it, and he runs on 93 octane.the guy i bought it form said that the compression was right around 185 like 2 days before i got it ( he didnt build the bike) im almost wondering if its running way to much octane, anyone have thoughts on this ??

In my lt I could run 4 hours on trails and not have to turn to the reserve. When the octane gets to low the motor will detonate. If you are not familiar it is a very bad thing. The good news is you can hear the motor ping, giving you an indication that you need to run a higher octane fuel. Work your way down not up when doing the feeling out process. In the end just remember its better to be safe that sorry. You can also have the specs (what piston, gasket, cc head) taken to figure out the mechanical compression ratio and that will give you a good idea.

yea, i dont know the specs though, thats the problem.... so do you think that i would need like 30 gallons to ride realistically 225miles??? or would i need less than that????, this gas is like 4$/gallon

I hear you on the gas thing thats the reason I sold my 400ex, well part of it. I had to run 110 in it and it was 6.00 a gallon. When you are figuring how much gas I don't think mileage is the correct way to figure I would think of it in hours. That is of course if you are planning on riding on a paved road at a constant speed. 225 miles in one weekend, I wish my *** could take that I guess I'm getting old.

MIne is a gas hog, 5 gallons will last me two good days of riding if I'm lucky. My compression is 190 and I run pump gas w/o isssue. So I would say get a compression gauge and find out what you have before you go spending 5-6 bucks a gallon. Stock was 175-180 I believe. I think you need to be up in the 210+ range before really needing race gas, but it also depends on your porting. Also running your mixture at 50:1 will help prevent detonation, because a leaner oil/fuel ration will actually create a richer air/fuel mixture. I would think with Amsoil it would be okay. Just be careful with the jetting and maybe richen it up a size or two and see how it runs.
