high maintenance*

The high-performance 450 thumpers are high-maintenance for a 4-stroke. The Z/KFX/DVX however is not nearly as much as the 450's. When I say "high-maintenance" though, all I really mean is that you'd be changing the oil and filter more so than the traditional 4-stroke. A rebuild may be in order more often as well, but I wouldn't think as much as a 2-stroke.

The Z and its clones are not particularly high maintenance. If you do a reasonable oil change interval (I never go more than 20 hrs, usually less), valve adjustments, and chain lube, that is about all you are going to have to worry about on a routine basis.
The 450R on the other hand is such a high revver, that it needs very frequent oil changes. I never go more than 5 hrs on this machine! Some great advice about oil! http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm Everything that goes for the CRF dirt bikes, also goes for the TRX450R.

The only maintenance you need to do to a Z/KFX is preventative maintenance for the most part. Like the others said oil & filter change, air filter cleaning.
