I just replaced mine a few months ago. It wasn't hard getting the shaft off. The hardest thing to do is get the new clamps tight on the new boot. One of those pair of pliers designed for CV clamps would have been nice.
Just pay attention to how the joint comes apart. You can put it together wrong and not know it. I put mine together wrong and didn't realize it until I was all done. I had to cut the new clamps off and take it apart to do it right. Paid a few bucks for new clamps and all was well. No problems since I replaced the boot.

Any transmission shop can put those bands on for a very small fee. Or atleast they should be able to.
