Default ? for z400 owners

I currently have a lt250r that has a port and polish, fmf full system, k & n filter bolted onto the carb and a few other mods here and there. My question is could I mod out z to keep up with my quad without getting a big bore kit? I rented an 04' z and my lt250r could go alot of places the z couldn't. I plan on buying one in the near future, but with the raptor 700 coming out I'm rethinking my decision. I never race and I don't care if my quad is the fastest, but I want a quad that will at least do what my lt does. I hear if you open up the air box and put a full pipe on the z will really open up, but I thought I'd ask for opinions here first. Thanx in advance.

Just wait for the Z450. If you need that much performance, I'm sure you will be able to get it from this machine. The Z400 might not be enough for you, it's not a full blown pro racer. It's great for the "B-Class" racer who hits a few or the occasional MX or XC race, and rides on homemade tracks and trails. But if you need a race machine, buy a YFZ450 or wait for the Z450, or keep your LT250.

Thanx for the advice ss97. I'm not planning on racing ever, and I really want reverse and electric start (that's why I'm shying away from the 450's). I just want to go up the same hills at the dunes that I go up on my lt250. I love the feel and handling of the z. Anyone else have any input?

I'd like to hear from owners as well, I'm looking real hard at the kfx400 & polaris predator. Prices are fairly close & sounds like the predators got a bit more power.

well if you rented the z 400 the one you rode might have been beat on pretty good motor wise.i would go and test a new one out and see if theres a differance .yes the pipe opens it up good ,but you can put the drz-e base gasket ,drz springs and cams if you don't want a big bore kit.

With my mods Im as fast or faster then a piped 450. Im not sure how it would compare to your 250, mainly depends on the porting. There is no comparison between the power of mine and a stock Z, but theres always room for improvement.

Thanx for the replies. I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with a z or 2 in the near future. Sounds like with a few mods I'll have plenty of power for the type of riding I do.

Blackbird & Witti-

Where would be the best place to buy the hotcams, Drz base gasket and valve springs? Also have either of you ridden in the sand much with your z? Thanx again for the replies.

the z and kfx are great bikes and very easy to mod. pipe ,k@n,jetted,cdi and diffrent sprocket made a world of diffrence!! very good torq. all around good bike, it's not real heavy, rides great , and you can pull wheelies all day long.

well the hotcams you can get anywhere from $120 -160 just have to look around for the lowest price.the drz-e base gasket and springs you can get at the dealer.i now have the athena 434 kit know in mine but before i had the drz-e gasket cams and springs and rode a few dunes before the 434kit .

You just need to open up the Z400's lungs. A filter and pipe would likely even the field.
