Default Winch Recommendation

I'm picking up a '05 King Quad and will probably be installing a winch at some point. Is a 2,000 lb sufficient or do I need a 2.5? I will probably not be doing much mudding but you never know. Is Warn the top of the line or is there a comparable alternative (cost is definately a factor). I thought I read somewhere that the KQ is pre-wired at the factory to accept a winch, is this true?

Also, what other accessories are a "must have" for this machine to increase overall performance? I'm thinking about larger (more aggressive) tires/rims, lift kit, etc. Can someone recommend a good tire/rim combo that they have had sucess with? I do mostly trail riding, limited mudding and some snow removal.

Thanks,
Marc

As for the winch a warn 2.0 would be more than sufficient we have 1 on each of our 4 honda 350 4x4ES's and have had no problems pulling out when they are buried up to the racks. As for tires 1 size larger ITP mudlites or ITP 589's would work really well.

I don't have a lot of input, but a buddy of mine had a 2,000# ramsey on his polaris and it doesn't work very well. I know another guy with a smaller ramsey winch on his honda and it wouldn't work at all. Not sure if these were just two lemons in the bunch or not, but it makes me not want a ramsey.

I have owned several(four) Ramsey winches, and have pulled against Warns and others, and have never had a better experience....they fit my KQ and are a little cheaper than the Warn....I used Ramseys on my four wheel drive Fords and Jeeps I love the new rocker switch on the handle bar,it makes winching much easier.. I guess its what evr you like,I will not go in the woods with out one..

Me, I goto Harbor frieght and buy that $50 jobber. I figure I'll go through 5 of them or so by the time I spend the same on one Warn or Ramsey. Sure the controls are bulky, annoying, and just overall inept, but it was in my budget. Now if I had my Druthers I think I'd pick up one of these. I'm not sure on which winches are sealed the best, and that to me would be the main selling point. But I've buried Olde El-Cheapo in the slop and goo dozens of times and it's never hiccuped on me once, and it's definitely not sealed.
Btw, a 2000lb winch should be sufficient.
Warn's got the name. But it's almost a Ford/Chevy/Dodge debate as to which brand is the best, good luck w/ your choice.

I bought a cheap version once! Left me down in a ditch in a cow pasture, had to walk three miles back to the camp to fetch my truck..it was cold in the winter time, and I had a lot of time to think about my decision to buy a cheap winch. I did more thinking on the subject when I was buying my new Ramsey.I have a 2500# model, and this size is recommended by my dealer and most all folks that use winches especially in hunting situations for retrievel of game. If I couldn't afford an electric one, I would buy a boat trailer winch and rachet it out of a stuck position....ATVOUTFITTERS.COM is a good site to check out, call Matthew and he will set you straight on tires and wheels also, thats where I got mine...Fast service!

for a kq you need at least a 2500lbs winch. if you put much srain at all on the 2000lbs winch they just quit pulling. ramsey offers a wireless remote with theres also. if i bought one it would be a ramsey or warn. just my .02
