Default engine oil

what is the correct way to check the engine oil on a Z-400, do you do it with the engine hot or cold. My oil leve is all over. Sometimes it will be fuill and sometimes empty. It is not smoking at all or leaking. Also do you screw the dipstick all the way in or just put it in and pull it out. It is an 05' so there better not be any engine problems. Thanks.

Check your owners manual. I don't have mine handy, but you are supposed to warm it up and don't screw the dipstick in if I remember correctly. When it sits, the oil drains out of the reservoir so even if you warmed it up, if you let it sit for a while, you won't get a correct reading.
