My 91 KQ When put into 4 wheel high, low or diff lock makes an
awful metal on metal "popping" noise only when decelerating.
I have had the diff apart on 2 occasions and the only thing I can
think of is that the dog is not engaging the other 2 gears enough,
and when the diff loads up under decel the dog slips on the gears!!
creating the noise! The 4 wheel drive does not work when the
noise occurs. Tires are stock size. kq has about 10000K on it
in 2 wd there is no noise.

Are your cables properly adjusted? That many miles there could be some tweaking needed...
