Default z400 performance questions

Hi everyone. I just bought a 03 z400 and i have a few questions:

1. I changed the oil exactly as recomended adding the 2.2 qts but after running the engine and then letting it cool and checking, the level is maybe 1/4 of the way up past the L mark. Is this ok or should i worry about adding more?

2. I ordered a HMF performace series slip on which included different jets. Is there any real need to tinker with the carb and replace the jet(s) or should i just install the pipe and go?

3. The clutch lever is lose and there appears to be a bolt running through the mount from top to bottom. Problem is the mount needs to be bent back with some vise grips but the bolt seems to be fixed. I removed the nut but i can't seem to get the bolt out.

4. Who makes a good rear skid plate? The stock plastic one seems a little...flimsy...

5. Any other peroidic maintenance tips / tricks?

Thanks everyone!

PRM makes awesome skids, a-arms, full belly skid, swingarm skid as well as many other parts. The skids are offered in different thicknesses and prices.

Great. Do they have a website or do you know of an online retailer?

prm-atv.com is the sight. They have the best prices I could find. As for jets, I put on a slip on DG 2, H&N filter and I had to rejet to a 152 from a 136. I also had to drill holes in the air box lid for more air flow. These mods. made a huge difference.

1. would add until it reads correct. (but make sure you are chekcing it right first!)

2. If you want to see any real performance gains rejet, the pipe will make probably make throttle responce worse without rejetting.

3. loosen the bolt, lefty loosy.

4. I like AC Racing, others are good also.

5. Keep the filter clean and sealed at where it connects to the quad. Lube the chain freqently--use chain lube or wax. Some things like WD40 can stretch the o rings and then your chain will wear like a normal chain instead of an o ring one.

2. As mentioned above, you are going to want to open up the airbox somehow when you rejet.

Thanks Bryce. I replied earlier but for some reason it didn't post so i'll ask again:

When modding the airbox how many holes, what size, and where (just a guestimate)?

I put three 1" holes in the lid down the middle. Also as it gets colder, you will want to close of the holes (duct tape) if the bike is running rough.

Do you not have problems with mud, water, etc getting into the airbox?

The holes work but will let dirt in more. There are some options if you want to keep your airbox cleaner. First there is a lid that has a K&N filter built in--great idea but spendy. 2nd on my old 300EX I made 6 1" holes then rigged up a piece of oiled foam to the underside of the lid. There are premade filtered vents you can snap in to 1" holes but you may need alot of holes because it appears the mesh closes the opening considerably. Or you can wrap the lid or top of the airbox in K&N prefilter material.
