I looked at the K@N lid---you're right---EXPENSIVE...
What I'm thinking about doing is taking your advice and drilling a few holes and cannibalizing an old filter and rigging it to the underneath side of the lid. When you did this what did you find was the best way to secure the foam? Small bolts and washers? Super glue? Duct tape???

The K&N lid filter is ex$pensive, I put an outer wrap on the K&N filter and I have not had any issues except, I clean the outer wrap after each ride. The idea of the pre-filter wrap on the out-side of the lid is a good idea, I will have to try it. Thanks for the idea and good luck.

I put the piece of flat oiled foam against the lid then put a sturdy plastic screen (from a hobby shop, like they sew yarn into or something) under it. Then just bolted through everything with some big washers on the screen side.
That stopped most of the dirt from even entering the air box. I rarley had to clean the ATV filter, just took off the lid, hosed it off under pressure, and reoiled the foam without removing the screen.
