Yes you do need to break it in like your going to ride it, dumbass. Its a proven method, click that link. Theres a shop in my area called R&R cycles. They build some sick v-twins. They're well known throughout the US now. Reggie built a motor for a friend of my brother's, and he pussyfooted the thing because he was listening to people like you. Reggie rebuilt it for him and told him if he drives it like that again, he's not fixing it. But the one he built for my brother has been running extremely strong for the last 5 years without a problem. Read the article in the link that welby posted. And being such a newbie, I wouldn't recommend coming on here calling people dumbasses. How old are you anyway?

stocks, I broke my engine in rather hard, nearly two years ago. I've put a lot of hard ridden hours on it and have had no trouble. I pulled it apart a couple months ago to add a thinner base gasket, valve springs and a set of cams. Prior to disassembly I did a compression test. I was at around 130psi. Stock is supposed to be 140-145psi. However my slight loss wasn't anything to worry about, and was definately not rings. I had some build up on the valve seats from a rich condition.
The cylinder still had visible cross hatching on it, so no need to touch the nice Nikasil coating. My rings were well within spec. I gapped some new rings, lapped the vavles, dropped everything on with new gaskets and ran it. My cams were already broken in so no need to do a cam break in, so I ran it hard. Tested it @ around 220psi (12.1:1 with old style HotCams, no auto decompression). Two months later, still 220psi.

I am not debating you at all but I would like to know who has done this 2-3 yrs ago and still has the machine running strong....also, who didn't do this 2-3 yrs ago on the same machine and what the difference is...
I have read that link a few times now but I just don't know.....it goes against everything we were ever taught......hmm decisions, decisions.....

This is a similar situation, with age old thinking applied to new technology.

Jorfrommaine may not be right, or wrong, but his approach by calling someone a dumass is completely uncalled for and I can say that the last thing he wants is my complete and undivided attention. I can be quite formidable to those that think degrading others for sport is fun.
