My dad just got me a brand new 2006 z400!!!!! I LOVE IT!!! I just wanted to know if there was anything i needed to know about it other than what the dealer told me. He told me to run her easy for 6 to 10 hours because of it's break in period. And use common sense with it. And also i wanted to know how fast these things will go wide open. thanks!

Congrats!! The break in period is the main thing to pay attention to and then the initial service done after the break in period. Wide open it should go give or take 72mph. ......pretty wicked fast. The last thing is just to go out and rip it. HAVE FUN!!!

Congratulations.
I just got my Z250 and I love it, so I can only imagine how nice it is to have a brand new Z400. See, I figured for my first quad I better start off with something rather tame so I don't kill myself, but now I want more. Even though, I still love it and have a blast every time I'm on it.
I'm about two hours into the break in period, I had to set the idle screw farther in so I can't take it past 1/2 throttle cause I know I would if I could.
Have fun with it, but stay safe.
BTW, anyone know the max speed on the 250?

Break it in like youre going to ride it.
These are modern motors. Not our grandpas motors.
With that said every halfhour of riding stop and let it cool down for 10minuts or so for the first 4 hours..
And Congrats! Youll love it.

^^^Like powerstroke said, break it in hard. You need to create enough cylinder pressure to get those rings to seal properly.

powerstroke & wellby,
I am not debating you at all but I would like to know who has done this 2-3 yrs ago and still has the machine running strong....also, who didn't do this 2-3 yrs ago on the same machine and what the difference is...
I have read that link a few times now but I just don't know.....it goes against everything we were ever taught......hmm decisions, decisions.....

My dad said the same thing as you guys - break it in like you're going to ride it. I went on a tour of the American Ironhorse factory last summer and as soon as they assemble a bike they put it on a dyno and run it at WOT for a couple minutes. I know there is a difference between their S&S engines and my Suzuki, but I still can't see why you need to go 10 hours (that's a lot of seat time) without getting into it.
I ride it like I use a chainsaw - full throttle or none at all
BTW, thanks for that Break In Secrets article...great info there.
