Default Aftermarket CDI?

OK I am looking to up the RPM's a little bit on the Z and I was wondering what a good "cheap" CDI. Of course I want it to be a good one but I have seen a multitude of CDI's out there. What about the ones from RM ATV? Anyone? Thanks! I am not sure if I want something that is like programmable but I am not sure. Any thoughts?

Any CDI that is not a Dyna or Vortek is made by Procom and rebadged for whatever company is selling them. This includes the new Yoshi CDI's. Dyna makes a great non-programable unit for around $225. That's about the cheapest you're going to find for a real performance CDI. A lot of people had problems with the first few batches of Procom's. I'm running one right now that I got from Sweetquads.com and have had no problems. For $80 vs. $220, it does it's job just fine.

Im very happy with my Dyna CDI. It has an advanced timing curve, hotter spark, and a 10500 rev limiter. I would get the cheaper non-programmable version. Check sweetquads (site sponsor) or advantagecyclelc.com (has them for $215).

From what I have read Yoshi, vortex, or Dyna, are made by them. All of ther others are made by Procom, the other companies just put their name on them. I dont hear many good things about the procom CDI's.

When installing an aftermarket CDI, are there any other adjustments needed, or is just a straight bolt on? Thanks

As I stated above, the old Yoshi's were good. However, Yoshi sub'd out ProCom to make their new units. And again, all CDI's other than Dyna and Vortex are absolutely the same, no matter what company is selling them.

Frank, the CDI is a straight bolt-on, no other modifications are really required. People run the +1k RPM units on basically stock motors. That's the most that I would push it (10,100 rpms). When going higher you need to put in better valve springs, like the ones off of the DRZ400E bike (these are set up for 11k).
