2006 KQ Fine Tuning?
#1
Okay, I am thinking very seriously about purchasing a new 2006 KQ when they arrive at dealers in a couple of months. If I don't buy a KQ, it will be a new 2006 Grizzly instead. As of lately, I am sure we have all heard of various problems taking place regarding the KQ. For example, we have heard about the infamous reverse issue, and now apparent problems with tie rods, steering, and the stock air filter. Let's break these down and have a better look at each.
Reverse issue - This prior problem should be completely resolved in the new release of the 2006 models. Right? Therefore, this problem will definitely not be an issue any longer.
Tie rods - Someone in another thread stated that beefier tie rods will more than likely be installed on the new 2006 models, but it cannot be confirmed at this point in time. Can anyone confirm? Is this really a strong issue?
Steering - Supposedly the steering may want to buckle at high speeds and tight cornering. Again, is this really an issue.........one that would make someone think twice about purchasing the machine?
Stock air filter - I understand this can be a serious issue if left untreated. However, if the stock filter is replaced immediately after purchase, while the bike is still brand new, with an aftermarket version (e.g., Uni Filter), then do we still have a problem here? I assume that we do not.
Given known issues that I have briefly described above, what other issues am I leaving out, or do not know about, that should be addressed if I buy a new KQ in a couple of months? Basically, if I do go with the King, I want to be prepared beforehand to make any adjustments/modifications that may be necessary in order to enhance the life and performance of the machine. Thanks for any input anyone would like to share.

Well I have had my KQ for about 8 Months now. Yes it is before the Magic serial # but I have not had any problems. I have put this thing through hell. I did bend a tie rod about a month ago but that is because I was going to fast and hit a tree. (It didn't move!) I am still driving it. It didn't bend it too much. I have had the KQ up to top speed several times with no problems. It is stable even around corners (not sharp corners but mild corners). I have not had any MAJOR accidents YET! I am still here in one piece and the same goes for my machine. I am very happy with my purchase and would buy one if I had to do it again. I have ridden artic cats, Yamaha's Polaris, and Hondas. And I Really like my KQ over them all like you said I'm sure Suzuki has fixed all the issues. That is why most people will tell you not to go out and buy a new model until they have a chance to work the bugs out of them. But I could not wait. After riding all those other ATV's I made up my mind. And I am an impatient person. But I think you would be happier with the KQ. I am!
Good Luck!

Your right, the reverse issue is over. I still have the stock tierods with 800+miles and they haven't bent or given me ANY problem, I think they only give people problems that drive at high speeds in rough terrain and if you jump it, which I don't do, I think it's common sense that your going to break something driving fast in rough terrain and in big ruts and ute's are made for jumping. I really like the King's steering so I don't see that as an issue for not buying it, I've never experienced buckled steering.
The air filter issue is a relatively new problem so I can't be 100% sure on this and the milage at which it happens is so varied. I consider this the most serious issue the King Quad has had out of all of the others you mentioned, because were talking about guys having to get a complete engine rebuild from this. I still have the stock filter and check it regularly and there's nothing getting in the engine and I'm not blowing blue smoke but I'm definitly going to get the Uni Filter just to be safe. As of right now I really think if you put an aftermarket foam filter in the day you buy it you won't ever have to worry about this problem. Hopefully by the time you are ready to buy your King Quad in a few months this issue is resolved by Suzuki, I just can't imagine them building 2006's with this air filter problem, that wouldn't be smart on their part. With this issue resolved I can see nothing else keeping me from recommending the King Quad, it's also got quite a bit more to offer over the Grizzly(better gas milage is a big advantage) and after 800miles I'm glad I chose the King Quad over the Grizzly.

Yes I agree I am going to buy a new filter. I have 1300 Miles on my KQ stock filter. I looked down it yesterday. There is a very thin film of dust so I am going to clean it out and get the filter. But it is not blowing Blue Smoke. I do a lot of riding in dusty conditions. So I think if it was a big problem it would have happened to me by now. But not going to take any chances!

If choices are between the KQ and the Griz, I would go with the KQ. It is very similar to the Griz, but with more punch. The big issue has been resolved and the little stuff is easy to take care yourself. Both of these quads are really good, but IMHO the scale tips towrd the KQ.
