In the owners manual it says to change the oil after 1200 miles after breakin. That seems like a long time not to change the oil. Is this a typo? When is everybody else changeing thier oil after breakin. On my other atvs i usually changed them at around 200 miles.

 

200-500 miles or every 20-30 hours or so is what I do. There will be a lot of people that will tell you it's overkill, but oil changes are really cheap insurance.

 

I'm with curls here... sooner is better. I don't thing I'd do every 200 unless I was working the quad really hard. but I wouldn't wait until 1200 for sure. If it sits allot I'd change it at least once a year.

 

First oil change should be 200-5oo miles after that,ever 1000 are so mile are once a year.....first change is important to get out the fine particles of metal etc that a new engine will produce...I ve done this on all my bikes(including two wheelers) and have never had an engine failure(broken rods,gauled pistons).....new oil is a cleaner more than anything...

 

Well as I just changed mine 20 minutes ago and the topic is fresh in my mind I thought I would add my 2cents worth.

I did the breakin ride and oil change at 12 hours (220 kms) or so, and now did my 2nd oil change at 1200kms (I do not know the hours) but it has been 5 months since the break in oil change. The oil was a nice honey gold color, and considering all of the crap I have been through with it in the past 5 months I was most impressed with the lack of real contamination. So I did the filter and the oil.

I pretty much change the oil at the end of October before it starts to get real cold and then again the first of May. I will only change it in between May and October if I have been extra bad and done a lot of deep mud and fire roads and the oil is dark when you check the level.
