Stupid ? But really need an answer

On my Z400, on the oil return box I have A small hair line crack. Would that make it hard to start? And shut down often? Would it cause it to suck air into the head, keeping it from running wright? Any input would be A help. Thank's.

I don't think thats your problem I am not real up on the z400's but maybe I can offer some help; if you think it is sucking air in you could try spraying some carb. cleaner, starting fluid on the crack while running. If the engine rpm increases or changes when sprayed then air is getting in. That would cause it to run lean and could cause the problems you are haveing. at least this test would confrim if that is it or not.

no it would not make it hard to start, look for other causes.
If it's hard to start I would check the spark plug and carb adjustments. I have an 87 LT230 that smokes and uses oil and it will start right up cause I have the carb set right.

Thank's guy's. I've got it taken care of. Kind of embarasing but I never thought about old gas. Drained the tank and the carb and it fired right up. I did order A new oil return box though it is starting to leak oil through it. Thank's again for your reply's.
