Default Z400 engine problems, please help!

My sons Z was making alot of top end noise last saturday while idling, still ran fine. Got it home and unloaded it,still ran fine. Started it up later and it cuts out now if you give it gas. It will die if you hold the throttle wide open.
I am assuming both these problems may be related since they happened the same day but not sure. While tearing it apart tonight I noticed the flywheel was soaked in oil wene I took the bolt out to sight in top dead center. Is this right? I thought it was dry last time I checked the valve clearance. Also, the valve clearance is good( tight side of specs) And the cam chain tensioner is on the 10th notch.
Please give me some ideas before my son sinks into a deep depression from lack of riding. Thanks

Yeah, 175 (Mikuni) main. If you have a dynojet kit the size charts are different. Our HMF full systems came with a 175 mikuni main, works great.
I have a brand new carb sitting in the garage as a backup, I'm going to start with rejetting my extra carb and installing to identify the problem as carburation or internal. I will post results.
I would still like to know if the flywheel should be dry or wet. And if the cam chain tensioner on the 10th notch is good, normal,or loose.
Anybody that knows please let me know, I'm heading out of state today for thanksgiving but I'll be back to check any replies late tonight. Thanks

Im not surehow many notches are on the timing chain tensioner. How many are left before its all the way out? It sounds like the timing chain may have jumped. The noise you heard might be the timing chain if its loose.

There will be oil by the flywheel.

OK,problem solved, all from using old gas cans i guess. Tank had som crap in the bottom of it fuel screen on top of petcock had some junk in it and bowl had some junk in it. I cleaned out and blew out carb with an air hose and it runs fine now. As far as the top end noise, I worked the cam chain tensioner back and forth a few times to make sure it was free and working correctly, reinstalled and changed the oil and filter. It seems better, definatly not as loud as it was last Saturday. I'm just going to call it fine for now. If it starts rattling again I'll start with a new cam chain and tensioner. Thanks for the help guys.
WITTI, FYI , The cam chain tensioner has a total of 12 notches and I am on the 10th, Still a little life in it but I'm guessing this is the source of my noise.

Kawiking, are you using dynojets or mikuni jets?

I'm refering to the post that kawzukicatguy posted about the timing chain tensioner notches.
