Default Kingquad and cold start....

Mine takes a fair good amount of times before firing up when cold, by cold I mean 15 F and less. I use 0 w 40 synthetic oil , battery is good, all ok, just that I was expecting to see a quad EFI doing better at start up.

how does it run once its warmed up? you might want to check your spark plug. so far it has gotten down to 16 and mine startd after about 5-6 seconds of cranking. it could also be some poor quality gas, and once that tank is burned, you wont have the problem anymore.

I have read where someone recomended letting the efi pressurize 3 times before trying to start in very cold weather. That is flip the kill switch to on, let it pressurize turn off and repeat 3 times before trying. Ive never had any trouble myself but I would be interested to know if it works for you. Good luck.

I started the thread maybe too early. I went for a ride this morning 10 F . My baby fired up after 4/5 turn, pretty good actually, ran well, didn't stall . Started like a king !!!

However you may have a good point about the pressurizing session. the other day my baby was cranking and cranking and.... so I waited 1 minute , and kaboom, started right up .

The way it started this morning makes me much more confident

thanks for your input guys

It was 10 degrees here yesterday, after 3-4 turns it fired right up and ran like it does in the middle of summer @ 80 degrees, plowed my driveway, never stalled or sounded different at all, this is one big reason why I bought the King.

Check with your dealer, I read on another site that there is now a new ECM for guys with problems in the really cold areas of the country, below -15... it is a free "recall" type thing for those in the colder climate. I'm going to check with my dealer, seems like it is for all 05's, but 06's were not listed as needing the new ECM...

My dealer did something with my ECM when I just took it in for the tierod recall but I didn't ask them exactly what, the receipt said recalls done: ECM, tierods, throttle. So baveux2 you may have a different ECM than me check with your dealer to get the other one for colder starting.

..I wonder why SOME dealers are not on top on the new service bulletins,changes,updates,etc..I could use the new ecm in the winter where I use ours, 6000 -7000 feet and -15 or more...My dealer gets informed by me about the bulletins lol...( another dealer is waaaay too far away to go too,may have to switch brands )..I told them about the reverse tranmission exploding & ecm switch, and they looked at me like a goat starring at a new fence...now I'll have to inform them about the winter ecm..& get ready for the "New fence goat stare"... on another note..boy... some KQ owners on "another site", are really having problems with engine rebuild at only 600 miles and up, because of the dirt gettintg past the air filter.and/or allegedly faulty factory installed piston rings....this does concern me and the life of our KQ..we like it alot, but the future and life expectancy doesnt sound good...

I haven't experienced the kind of cold you are describing but I can tell you what I have learned... Kings are sensitive to fuel pressure, fuel type and battery charge. I have had the best results with fresh high test gas. Turn the key to on without any lights on and let it sit there in until the fuel pump stops presurizing, then push the start button.

Also, I have had awesome results using genuine battery tenders. Other units I have tried aren't worth a crap on smaller batteries IMO. So, if you can, do your quad a favor and hook up a battery tender. Your KQ will love you for it.
