Default z400 corroding

I just recieved this in a email yesterday, I will have to check out my wifes bike.

The corrosion problem just surfaced. Suzuki learned about it two weeks ago and they are reportedly conducting a "confidential" investigation. After reading about numerous other people that were having the problem, I pulled the water inlet cover today on my '05 Z400 and discovered that the magnesium cover was badly corroded and pitted. If it corrodes all the way through, it will dump coolant into the engine.

What you need to do is remove the four bolts to the water inlet next next to the oil filter, and loosen the clamp and pull off the water hose. Once the bolts are removed, work the cover backwards about 1/2 inch (it won't come off unless you remove the whole clutch cover) and rotate it to the right. This will expose the water inlet so that you can inspect it. When you reinstall it, use distilled water and ATV coolant.

If you are under warranty, you will want to take it the dealer. If you are out of warranty (like me), you might want to contact Suzuki customer service or make a claim with Suzuki through your dealer. The only know fix is to buy an '04 aluminum cover for now.

Great, I'm thinking of getting a 2006 in 3 months Is there anything I can add to the coolant such a lube mix to prevent this corroding? I see alot of additives for coolant, But not sure if this will work? Should I hold off on this quad now?

Just Found this. Wonder if works. All pre mixed.

What about protection against corrosion?

The Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant TM formulation has shown outstanding performance in testing that measures its ability to prevent corrosion within all cooling systems, including aluminum, copper, cast iron, steel, magnesium & solder. Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant TM has shown excellent performance in all of the ASTM D 5216 (Propylene Glycol Base Engine Coolant) tests. Also, Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant TM meets all the corrosion performance requirements of ASTM D 3306 & ASTM 4985 (the main specifications for premium ethylene glycol antifreeze).magnesium

What was suzuki thinking putting mangnesium on an engine. I know it's lighter, but everyone should know that when you mix metal types, it will cause corrision unless a consumble electrode it intsalled within the coolant system. This is true of aluminum on iron as well unless a corrosion inhibitor is supplied with the coolant.

I only say this because us car guys know that an aluminum radiator with cast iron

The new 450 has these magnesium covers as well....

Anyone know if running the engine ice will prevent this problem like bansheecraze32 was asking?
